The SAT is now delivered in a digital format and is structured into two main sections: Reading & Writing and Math.
Exam Pattern
- Duration: 2 hours 14 minutes (Digital SAT)
- Total Score: 1600 (Reading/Writing: 800 + Math: 800)
Each of these sections is split into two modules.
There is a short break between the Reading & Writing section and the Math section.
Here’s a breakdown of each section:
| Section | Time | Number of Questions | Key Topics / Skills |
| Syllabus for English |
| Evidence-Based Reading & Writing | 64 min (two 32-min modules) | 54 multiple choice questions | Reading comprehension (passages) • Grammar, usage, punctuation, sentence structure • Vocabulary in context • Interpretation of graphics / tables as part of passages • Rhetorical skills (e.g. purpose, cohesion) |
| Syllabus for Math |
| Math | 70 min (two 35-min modules) | 44 questions (mix of multiple choice & student-produced response) | Divided into 4 major areas: • Algebra • Advanced Math • Problem Solving & Data Analysis • Geometry & Trigonometry Some Questions are “in context” (i.e. real world scenarios) |
Key Math Topics in More Detail
Here are some of the common subtopics you should be familiar with:
- Algebra: linear equations, inequalities, linear functions, systems of linear equations, absolute value, etc.
- Advanced Math: manipulating polynomials, quadratic equations, exponentials, functions and their notation, nonlinear systems, etc.
- Problem Solving & Data Analysis: ratios, proportions, percentages, statistics (mean, median, mode, standard deviation), interpreting graphs, probabilistic reasoning, experimental design, etc.
- Geometry & Trigonometry: lines, angles, triangles, circles, volume & area, basic trigonometry, coordinate geometry, etc.
